In Biblical times Shavuot was an agricultural festival marking the end of the grain harvest, a one-day festival during which thanksgiving was given and first fruits were offered to the temple.
After the fall of the second temple in 70 C.E., the agricultural rites could not be observed. During the Rabbinic period, connections began to be made between Shavuot and the Revelation at Sinai, which also took place in the month...
