Avenu Malkenu
As first our relationship with God was Malkenu - our King - a sovereign above us. Should we sing to Malkenu, it would be with trepidation, lest our voices not be found suitable, and we, as subjects, be dismissed. After two thousand years have passed, and our relationship to God grew beyond Malkenu to Avinu - our Father - a parent who watched over us in love. Should we sing to ‘Avinu Malkenu’, it would be with the awe reserved for a king balanced by the love we feel for a parent. Another two thousand years have passed, and our relationship has evolved still further, from Malkenu to Avinu and now from our Parent to our Partner.
