Description
GABRIEL an Anglicized spelling of the Hebrew GAVRIEL, meaning STRENGTH OF GOD or GOD IS MY STRENGTH (Kolatch, Alfred J. 1984. The Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names. Middle Village: Jonathan David. 90).
Hebrew Bible name - Gabriel appeared to the prophet Daniel. ‘And it came to pass, when I, even I Daniel, had seen the vision, and sought for the meaning, then, behold, there stood before me as the appearance of a man. And I heard the voice of a man between the banks of ‘Ulai,’which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision’ Daniel 8:15-16).
Talmud - Of three walking along, the teacher should walk in the middle, the greater of his disciples to his right, the smaller one at his left, and thus do we find that of the three angels who came to visit Abraham, Michael went in the middle, Gabriel at his right, Raphael at his left? (Yoma 37a).
Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Michael came to bring the tidings to Sarah [of the birth of Isaac]; Raphael, to heal Abraham; and Gabriel, to overturn Sodom. But is it not written, ‘And there came the two angels to Sodom at even [evening]?’ Genesis 19:1; Baba Metzia 86b).
Liturgy - There are four angels mentioned in the Bedtime Shma. ‘May Michael be at my right Gabriel, Uriel before me, and Raphael behind me; and above my head the Presence of God’ [Shechina El] (Scherman, Nosson and Meir Zlotowitz. 1989. The Complete Art Scroll Siddur Nusach Ashkenaz. Mesorah Publications, Ltd. 295).
Kabbalistic name- Gabriel is the Angel associated with the planet Mars (Kaplan, Aryeh. 1990. Sefer Yetzirah. The Book of Creation York Beach: Samuel Weiser 168). Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha - Gabriel is one of the seven archangels. The names and functions of seven archangels in Enoch 20 are listed here:
Uriel who is over the world and over Tartarus;
Raphael who is over the spirits of men;
‘I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which go in and out before the glory of the Holy One’ (Tobit 12:15).
Raguel who is . . over the world of the luminaries (Charles, R. H. 1968. The Apocrypha and Pseudephigrapha of the Old Testament. Peabody: London: Oxford UP.567).
Michael, who is set over the best part of mankind and over chaos;
Sariel [Zariel], who is set over the spirits, who sin in the spirit;
Gabriel, who is over paradise, the serpents and the Cherubim;
Jeremiel, who God set over those who rise (Gilbert, R.A. Tr. R. H. Charles. 2003. The Book of Enoch the Prophet. (I Enoch 17).
“These seven angels are always in the proximity of God and are the ones that are always called upon to carry out takes of special significance for world history (Gilbert, R.A. Tr. R. H. Charles. 2003. The Book of Enoch the Prophet. 1 Enoch 20. Boston: Weiser Books. 17; Encyclopedia Judaica 1972. Ed. Cecil Roth. Jerusalem: Keter. v.2. 962).
The Hebrew letters featured in this painting are Gimel Beit Resh Yud Aleph Lamed. Taken together, and reading from right to left, they spell GABRIEL.
Each of the 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet has a special meaning and a story to tell. Here a few brief ones about the letters on this painting.
GIMEL is the 3rd letter of the Hebrew alphabet, has a numerical value of 3, makes a sound like the G in Give, is constructed of a Vav and a Yud means CAMEL or REWARD and is associated the phrase Gemilut Hasadim - ACTS OF LOVINGKINDNESS.
The Bahir, which may be the oldest kabbalistic text, is attributed to R. ben HaKana, a first century kabbalist. In this text, R. Akiva states, the Gimel has "three parts because it BESTOWS, GROWS AND SUSTAINS." The three parts are the head, the tail, and a pipe in the middle through which energy can pass. "The GIMEL draws from above through its head and disperses through its tail” (The Bahir York Beach: Samuel Weiser. lx, 8).
BEIT is the second letter of the Hebrew alphabet, its numerical value is 2,means HOUSE, HOME, CONTAINER and makes a sound like the B in Beautiful.
Midrash -
Torah begins with the letter Beit. It was chosen for this honor because it is closed on top, bottom and on the right. It is open on the left, the direction of the text, to teach us to look forward and not backward, in our daily lives (Freedman, H. and Simon Maurice Tr. 1983 Genesis Rabbah. New York: Soncino 9).
The first letter to come to me in meditation was the BEIT. For years I sat in the BEIT as I meditated. It is a safe place.
Resh is the 20th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, has a numerical value of 200, makes a sound like the R in Radiant and means BEGINNING or HEAD. When one spells out the letter Resh in Hebrew, it is Resh Yud Shin. Yud and Shin spell Yesh - THERE IS. The letter Resh means BEGINNING. So it is possible to say that the Resh literally means THERE IS A BEGINNING.
YUD is the 10th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, has a numerical value of 10, means HAND, makes a sound like the Y in Year and is a simple point. It is the smallest letter in the alphabet and yet is frequently associated with the very large concept of EMANATION, the highest level in the Four World paradigm of Kabbalah.
Menachot 29b teaches that the WORLD TO COME was created by use of the letter Yud.
Yud has the important job of being the first letter of the Tetragrammaton - Yud Hey Vav Hey. Zohar states that, in this context, the Yud represents the head of all creatures (Zohar. 1984 Tr. Harry Sperling et al. New York: Soncino. 3:130).
ALEPH is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and has a numerical value of one, meanings are: THOUSAND, MASTER, TEACHING, OX and the Aleph makes no sound.
The Aleph is composed of a Vav (6) and 2 Yuds (20). Their combined value is 26 which is the numerical value of the name of God - Yud (10) Hey(5) Vav (6) Hey (5). (Chefitz, Mitchell. 2001 The Seventh Tellin. New York: St. Martins Press. 219).
When one is meditating with the Aleph be prepared for hugs. The Aleph loves to give hugs and receive them.
Lamed is the 12th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, has a numerical value of 30, makes a sound like the L in Like, Lamed means both TO LEARN and TO TEACH.
The Lamed is the tallest and most majestic of all the letters. Indeed Rashi interprets A TOWER FLYING IN THE AIR (Hagigah 15b) - as applying to the upper stroke of the Lamed. The Lamed is generally considered to be constructed of a Caf (20) with a Vav (6). In this configuration the LAMED has a GEMATRIA of 26 - the same as that of the Yud (10) Hey(5) Vav (6) Hey (5) name of God (Haralick, Robert M. 1995. The Inner Meaning of the Hebrew Letters. Northvale: Jason Aronson. 180)
Since LAMED means LEARNING, it would seem that this would constitute a direct connection between LAMED, LEARNING and GOD.
Considering the majesty of this letter, I must admit my meditations are very undignified. I usually ride the LAMED as one would a hose if one were a very bad rider - sitting on the curve and hold onto its neck. Let me know about yours.
