Artist's Description

KADDISH is from the Aramaic, meaning CONSECRATED, SANCTIFIED, BECOME HOLY (Alcalay, R. The Complete Hebrew English Dictionary. Jerusalem: Massada. . 2239; Jastrow, Marcus. 1903. A Dictionary of the Targumim, the Talmud Babli and Yesushalmi, and the Midrashic Literature Brooklyn: International Hebrew Book. 1319).

Liturgy - For eleven months following the death of a parent and on the anniversary of the death [yahrzeit],
a person is to recite Kaddish for the well-being of the departed. Kaddish is recited only in the presence of Minyan.
Kaddish was not originally a prayer for the dead. It was recited at the conclusion of religious discourses. It is in Aramaic, the language in which the religious studies were conducted. Gradually Kaddish came to be said by mourners. The first allusion to this custom is found in Machzor [a special prayer book for Rosh haShannah and Yom Kippur] (Vitry, dated 1208).
