The ‘lamedvavniks’ are described as being extremely modest and upstanding. They screen their identities under the guise of poverty and ignorance and work in commonplace jobs. These holy people are popular heroes in folk tales, emerging from their self-imposed concealment, and by the mystic powers which they posses they succeed in averting the threatened disasters from a people persecuted by surrounding enemies. They return to their anonymity as soon as their tasks are accomplished, concealing themselves in the Jewish community where they are unknown. The lamedvavniks’ are scattered throughout the ‘disapora’...
