MIRIAM is the English version of the Hebrew MIRYAM which is usually translated SEA OF BITTERNESS, SORROW (Kolatch, Alfred J. 1984. Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names Middle Village: Jonathan David. 378).
R. Shoni Labowitz author of Miraculous Living, has another interpretation. She translates MIRYAM as RISING WATERS. She bases this on the root Mem Resh Aleph which means TO FLY in the ‘hiphil’. According to the The Analytical Hebrew and Chaldee Lexicon the primary idea of this root was probably TO RISE.
MIRIAM, from the Chaldaic, means MISTRESS OF THE SEA (Kolatch, Alfred J. 1984. Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names Middle Village: Jonathan David. 378).
Hebrew Bible name - Miriam was the sister of Moses and Aaron (Numbers 26:59).
