42 LETTER NAME OF GOD
‘There was engraved on the staff of Moses, the holy Name radiating in every direction, which was illumined in forty-two different colors’ (Zohar 1984. Tr. Harry Sperling et al. New York: Soncino. 1:9a).
Talmud -
R. Judah in the name of Rab: The forty-two lettered Name [of God] is entrusted only to the person who is pious, meek, standing in the middle of his days, does not get angry, does not get drunk, and is not insistent on his rights. And the person who knows it, does not use it lightly, observes it in purity, is beloved above and popular below, feared by man, and inherits two worlds, this world and the world to come (Kiddushin 71a).
According to Rabenu Tam the 42 Letters [of the Name of God] consists of the first forty-two letters of Torah, from the Beit of Bereshit through the Beit of bohu (Genesis 1:1); Tosafot, Haggigah 11b, s.v. ein dorshin).
