Talmud - Rabbi Meir was a leading second century scholar, the most brilliant student of Rabbi Akiba. He came from a a family of proselytes related to the Roman emperors. According to some sources, his real name was Maisa or Moise (Kolatch, Alfred J. 1984. The Complete Dictionary of English and Hebrew First Names. Middle Village: Jonathan David. 158).
